Beginning Family History Training Classes:
1. Beginning Computer Skills(Feb 18th):
Instructor – Kenneth Spencer
Learn the basic Skills needed to operate your computer effectively. This class would help patrons learn
the computer desktop and become more familiar with its capability and functions.
– Learn Computer Orientation and Navigation skills
– Start and stop computer programs (ie. Web Browsers, Word Processors, Graphic programs, games, etc.)
– Use the computer as a filing cabinet to store files
– Manage computer programs and windows with the mouse and keyboard
– Develop good file organization using Windows explorer, folders, flash drives, etc.
– Practice using the mouse and keyboard shortcuts
2. Creating accounts and Navigating FamilySearch & Family Tree (Feb 25th):
Instructor – William Memmott
FamilySearch and Family Tree is an online family history research site containing billions of family
records,cand it is free to the public. This class would help patrons establish new online accounts and
help patrons learn and navigate many of the features contained in this website.

3. Understanding and Researching With DNA (March 3):
Instructor – Garry Baker
Patrons will learn and understand how to receive, interpret and correlate DNA results and how to apply
the principles of DNA in researching ancestors.
– How DNA is passed – who we receive DNA from vs who we share DNA.
– What is a Centimorgan and how test results are interpreted.
– What is an autosomal DNA test
– How test tells abt ethnicity and why does it change.
– How centimorgan chart relates to an ancestral chart.

4. Managing Family Memories (photos, documents, stories, audio) in Family Tree (March 10):
Instructor – Brent Baker
FamilySearch preserves memories so they can be shared for generations to come. Students will learn
how to use the Memories Gallery and the individual memories folder and learn how to manage
Photos, documents, stories, and audio media to create stories around family members. Patrons will
learn to capture, create and upload photos and then tag people in Family Tree. Patrons will learn
how to create and save PDF files in word documents and then upload to Family Tree.
– Learn ways to capture photos and upload into the Memories Gallery.
– How to create new albums and manage photos and documents in the Memories Gallery.

Instructor – Glen Sisam
Students will learn how to search and find historical records online in both free and subscribed
newspaper publications archives. Learn how to create, document and attach these historical records to
your family tree.
– Learn and understand how to use Chronicling America (Historic American Newspapers)

6. Finding Family Historical Records using the FamilySearch Wiki and Catalog Tools (March 24).
Instructor – Glen Sisam
The FamilySearch Wiki is a free, online genealogy and family history guide that lists websites, provides
research strategies, and suggests records and resources to help you find ancestors from all over the
world. Search the catalog of genealogical materials (including books, online materials, microfilm,
microfiche, and publications) made available by FamilySearch online and in libraries and centers
worldwide.
– Review Wikipedia Focus and Purpose with over 90,000 articles.
– Searching places where ancestors were born, lived and died.
– How to use the Wiki for searching family historical records.
– How to use the Online Genealogy Records.

documents and stories; and more than 50 million member created family trees.
