Stanton MacDonald-Wright’s “Haiga Portfolio” (1965-1966) blends Eastern and Western influences, pairing vibrant modernist paintings with haikus written by some of Japan’s most influential poets.

Stanton MacDonald-Wright’s “Haiga Portfolio” (1965-1966) blends Eastern and Western influences, pairing vibrant modernist paintings with haikus written by some of Japan’s most influential poets.

The term “haiga” refers to a style of Japanese painting by haiku poets, whose poems are known for their brevity and simplicity. Each of the ten prints that compose the “Haiga Portfolio” have a corresponding haiku.

NEHMA has a limited number of free parking spaces located just north of the Performance Hall. Please park in stalls labeled “Museum Visitor” and notify visitor services upon your arrival. See the map below for additional parking options and note that USU lots are strictly enforced until 5PM. With few exceptions, USU lots are generally open to all on weekends. Public Transportation: ride Cache Valley Transit routes 1, 4 or CVN to visit NEHMA. Use the Fine Arts stop (eastbound) or Richards Hall (westbound) on E 700 N and walk toward the Performance Hall. UDAM Teaching Artist; Visual Artist | Trish Clay has worked for forty years teaching and counseling at all levels from elementary to college, including Job Corps and prison programs. She has been awarded many awards for her teaching, including two Fulbright scholarships to Japan and the Beverly Sorenson Award for Secondary Art Teacher of the Year. She has taught in China and Vietnam and traveled throughout the world, gathering ideas for her teaching. She loves to teach and interact with students of all ages, and continues to work with Girl Scouts, private individuals and the prison half way house for women.
