Hawkwatching: How We Do it and Why

Each fall, teams of volunteers set up camp along ridgelines across North America to monitor the migration of diurnal raptors. To do so, they need to have sharp identification skills that allow them to identify birds, from a distance, in flight. However, the skill isn’t just for biologists and researchers. Hawkwatching is also a ton of fun once you get the hang of it!

Join Dr. Dave Oleyar, Director of Long-term Monitoring & Community Science, for a one-hour presentation on how we hawkwatch and why. Dave will cover the basics of how to identify a raptor in flight, as well as what we learn from this data. He will then will take a few questions, as part of our five-week virtual celebration of raptor migration, 35 Years & Counting.
