History of Photography: Recent Work by Laurel Caryn investigates the transformations in contemporary image culture; how we record history through photographs and how that process has been changed – and to some degree – lost, with digital technology. By combining the 19th century process of cyanotype (acrylic paint and the discarded database of art history slide images), Caryn confronts the viewer with the paradigm shift in how we record and receive visual information, the role of the spectator in that process (are we passive or complicit?), and the impact of the memory trace all photographs contain. Caryn is an Assistant Professor/Lecturer in the Art and Art History Department at the University of Utah where she teaches historical and alternative photographic processes.
