History of Quilting

Burrr!  Even our southern Utah area gets cold in January.  Okay, admittedly locals might think 35 degrees is bone-chilling cold while some of our higher altitude neighbors could feel that a little sun bathing is in order.  Whatever your particular view, when the weather outside is too cold for comfort, a warm quilt makes everything better.  The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Third Weekend Event in January will be a delight to anyone who loves a good quilt.

The presentation will be America’s Quilting History: A Comfort Through Hardship and will feature master quilter, Gaydeen Dollar.  Gaydeen started sewing at 10 years of age, has taught classes, has a Etsy shop and a long arm business.  During her 40 years of quilting, she has created thousands of quilts.  In addition to the quilts in her home and those she has given as gifts to family and friends, her quilts have found their way to cancer victims and hospice patients, displaced and abused children, the homeless, and soldiers of valor.  For Gaydeen, giving a quilt is a true gift of love, providing a warm hug to someone feeling lonely, sad, unwell, or afraid.  If a beloved quilt gives you a sense of comfort and security, this event is worth your time.

Gaydeen will share her wealth of information about quilting history from colonial times, the pioneers as they prepared to travel west, the civil war, the Victorian era, the depression, World War II, the quilting revival during the Bicentennial, and the revolution of quilt arts.  Join quilt lovers and those interested in this creative, useful craft at the DUP McQuarrie Memorial Museum on January 18 at 10:00 a.m.
