WHO: Since entering the league in 2010, Derrick Favors has rapidly developed into one of the NBA’s top power players. Standing at a dominating 6 foot 10, Derrick’s athleticism, tenacity and sheer drive have helped him establish a strong presence on the court. The towering Forward/Center has been described as a powerful post player, excellent rebounder and shot-blocker.
Long before he graced the NBA courts, he made a name for himself in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. While attending South Atlanta High School, Derrick was named to the McDonald’s All-American Team and the 2009 Jordan Brand Classic at Madison Square Garden, where he earned MVP honors at both games. The impressive performances garnered him the title of one of the best high school basketball players in the class of 2009.
Derrick finished his time at South Atlanta as one of the most highly-ranked and decorated high school players. His illustrious high school career drew interest from some of the top colleges around the country, however Derrick chose to stay close to home and attend Georgia Tech. He continued his path of excellence at Tech becoming only the 11th Georgia Tech player to earn Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year honors and named to the Sporting News National All-Freshman team.
After his freshman season, it was clear that Derrick was ready to go to the next level and he made the decision to enter the NBA Draft. It proved to be the right decision as he was selected third overall by the New Jersey Nets and quickly established himself as a promising rookie.
