Maurice Wiberg Retrospective & Legacy Exhibit

The Brigham City Museum of Art and History is honored to host the Maurice Wiberg: Artist, Mentor, Teacher, Friend Exhibit. The exhibit will feature artwork from Maurice Wiberg as well as the many students he inspired from decades of teaching. The exhibit will be on display starting Saturday, November 25th, 2023. A free Reunion and Opening Reception will take place at the Brigham City Museum on Saturday, December 2nd, from 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. All former students of Maurice Wiberg and their families are invited to reminisce with Maurice and Linda Wiberg.

Wiberg taught at Mountain Crest, Sky View, and Logan High Schools while involved in the Utah Art Education Association mid-winter workshops in St. George and summer workshops at Utah State Campus, Hebrew City, Salt Lake City, and Cedar City, Utah. He also served as Co-President of the Utah Arts Education Association from 2001-2002. Wiberg received a B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing with a Secondary Teaching Certificate in 1976 and taught as a Certified Professional Art Teacher from 1983 until 2008.

Wiberg was awarded the National Art Education Association Art Teacher Award for Utah in 2000. Wiberg won Best of Show for his “Cloudy Day in Torrey” in 2016 and Juror’s Award for “Hidden Pass Lake Powell” in 2017 from the Utah Watercolor Society. Wiberg also served as the Juror for the 2023 Plein Air Competition at the Brigham City Museum.

In the mid-1990s, he was commissioned by the Heber C. Kimball Family to paint two paintings now on display at the Missionary Training Center in Preston, England. Wiberg was also commissioned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to decorate temples in Brigham City, Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake, Provo, and the Buenos Aires, Argentina Temple.

Despite retiring in 2008, Wiberg returned to part-time teaching at Logan High School in 2011 to teach AP Art and drawing classes. Wiberg states that teaching has been a blessing in his life, and he’s thrilled for the opportunity to showcase his work and the works of his former students. Some of which, he admits, have far surpassed the teacher. Maurice Wiberg loves art and enjoys all mediums but prefers watercolors, oil painting, and acrylics. He will also use charcoal, colored pencils, and, occasionally, airbrush.

Art transcends high school credit and facilitates an impression of feeling for Wiberg and his students. His latest works include painting portraits for those family and friends who have passed away. Maurice and his wife, Linda, have nine children and 35 grandchildren and live in Hyrum. The Maurice Wiberg Exhibit will be on display until Saturday, January 27th, 2024.
