Once, not so long ago, the evil Mouse King and his army of mice invaded the realm of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The prince of the realm and his soldiers fought bravely against the mice, but the Mouse King cast a spell that turned the prince into a Nutcracker, the soldiers into wooden toy soldiers, and the Sugar Plum Fairy into nothing more than a doll. The kind magician and toymaker Drosselmeyer found the enchanted toys and realized they were more than they seemed to be. Our show begins with Drosselmeyer in his workshop trying to break the spell. None of his magic works. He realizes it will take more than magic to break the curse; it will take the strongest forces of all, courage and love. Just then, a maid arrives with an invitation for Drosselmeyer to attend a Christmas party for his godchildren Fritz and Clara Stahlbaum. Drosselmeyer packs up the enchanted toys and takes them with him to the party. At the party, Drosselmeyer gives Clara the Nutcracker, and Clara falls deeply in love with it. That night, Christmas magic fills the house and the toys become life-sized. Sensing his spell weakening, the Mouse King returns with his mice and a battle ensues between the mice and toy soldiers. When the Mouse King almost kills the Nutcracker, Clara rushes to his aid, and the Nutcracker slays the Mouse King. With the Mouse King’s death, the spell is broken. In gratitude, the Nutcracker Prince takes Clara through the realm of the Snow Queen into the realm of the Sugar Plum Fairy. There the Sugar Plum Fairy greets them and makes Clara an honorary princess as a reward for her love and courage, which broke the spell. All the sweets of the realm dance for joy to honor Clara and the prince.
