This year, Rose Exposed goes virtual with the same spirit as the live performance of summers past. An annual event by the Performing Arts Coalition, the six music, theatre and dance companies in residence at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center come together to produce a lively evening for everyone to enjoy. The 2020 title for Rose Exposed is “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” because the presence of COVID-19 prevents us from touching, hugging and greeting each other in ways that speak to our humanity.

Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation is represented by Koji Attwood, who will provide piano accompaniment for all performances. In addition, he will perform the exotic, virtuosic, Indonesian gamelan-inspired, “In the Streets of Old Batavia” from Leopold Godowsky’s Java Suite.

Plan-B Theatre is represented by the mother/daughter duo of Dee-Dee Darby-Duffin and Darby Mest, who are currently quarantining together. They sing together frequently but have never composed. Until now. “Isolation Lullaby” is about what and who you hold on to, reach out to, and surround yourself with in times of turmoil.

Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company considers how intimacy is evolving in a physically-distanced world as they perform to Ottorino Respighi’s Notturno.

SB Dance puts its spin on “Là ci darem la mano” (“There we will hold hands”) from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Don Giovanni with dancers accompanied by soprano Rhea Miller and baritone Daniel Tuutau.

PYGmalion Theatre Company is represented by Tamara Johnson Howell, who teaches theater and music to middle schoolers. She shares what it’s like teaching young artists, live, in the world of Covid-19. And she will sing a little ditty set to Franz Liszt’s Les jeux d’eaux á la Villa d’Este.

Repertory Dance Theatre offers a slightly irreverent and silly exploration of the romantic and sensual characteristics of personal protective equipment as they perform to Impromptu, Op. 24, #3 “Eros” by Sergei Bortkiewicz.
