Silk and Venom: The Biodiversity of Spiders

Dr. Greta Binford will discuss the biodiversity of arachnids and why they are inspiring, her travels searching for spiders, and her research on spider venom.

Binford is a professor of biology at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. In her lab, students participate in evolutionary analyses of spider venoms. Binder was awarded Oregon Professor of the Year in 2011. She has collected and studied spiders all over the world. Binford has also been profiled in The New Yorker magazine, in a public television episode of “NOVA” and in the book, “Silk and Venom: Searching for a Dangerous Spider” by Kathryn Lasky. She even has a spider named after her: Austrarchaea binfordae.
