Snow Maiden is an original ballet adapted from early 19th century Russian folktales. Academy Principal, Jennie Creer-King, choreographed this children’s ballet and says her mission was to convey the simple message: “It is better to love than not to love at all.” In the ballet, Father Frost tries to protect his daughter from the outside world by surrounding her with enchanted birds, caribou, and icicle fairies. She remains in this magical icicle forest until the pull of the human village becomes overwhelming and she ventures out and falls in love.
“I am so excited to present Snow Maiden at the Covey Center. Our dancers at the Ballet West Academy have reached a new level of talent that is sure to enthrall our community,” said Creer-King. “The story is fantastical and the sets and costumes are exquisitely detailed. I am confident that our audiences will be delighted.”
Original music from Rimsky-Korsakov and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Snow Maiden opera will transport families to the winter wonderland where the piece is set. The ballet also features beautifully embellished costumes, designed by Angela Whitehill and Marthanne Argyle. A mythical storybook set has been designed by Orem-resident Doug Ellis.
Tickets for Snow Maiden start at just $15 and, with just two performances on March 14 and 15, tickets will sell-out quickly. Purchase tickets at www.coveycenter.org or by calling 801-852-7007.
