The 2023-24 season of the Virtuoso Organ Recital Series at the Salt Lake Tabernacle continues with renowned Tabernacle organist Brian Mathias in a recital featuring a varied program of music by Bach, Liszt, Locklair, Marchand, and Paulus. Dr. Mathias has competed in a number of prestigious international organ competitions, including the 2011 and 2014 Canadian International Organ Competitions and the 2010 Grand Prix de Chartres competition at Chartres Cathedral. He earned a doctor of musical arts degree at the University of Kansas, where he studied organ with James Higdon, as well as bachelor of music and master of music degrees from Brigham Young University, where his organ teachers were Don Cook and Douglas Bush.
The 11,623-pipe organ in the Salt Lake Tabernacle is one of the world’s largest and finest instruments, in addition to being widely recognized due to the Tabernacle Choir’s “Music & the Spoken Word” program, which has been on the air continuously since 1929 (radio) and 1963 (TV). The iconic casework dates back to 1867, with the bulk of the pipework dating to the 1948 work done by the distinguished Boston-based firm of Aeolian-Skinner.
