Dr. Cecelia Tichi will provide an illustrated presentation of the colorful era known as the Gilded Age, a period of rapid economic growth in America from approximately 1870 to 1900 in which the United States jumped ahead of Britain to become the world’s industrial leader.
Tichi is a Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor Emerita at Vanderbilt University. She is also an award-winning author and Professor of English and American Studies Emerita at Vanderbilt University. Her books span American literature and culture from colonial days to modern times. Her recent work draws upon the Gilded Age and prompted her books, Jack London: A Writer’s Fight for a Better America and Civic Passions: Seven Who Launched Progressive America.
Tichi’s research and teaching inspired What Would Mrs. Astor Do? The Essential Guide to the Manners and Mores of the Gilded Age, followed by Gilded Age Cocktails and Jazz Age Cocktails, which set the stage for her mystery crime novels that boast “Gilded” in each title. More info about Tichi and her books can be found at cecebooks.com.
