The current capitol building is actually Utah’s second in state history. Prior to the relocation, the territorial government originally met in the more centrally located Fillmore, Utah. However, because the majority of the territory’s population lived in and around Salt Lake, the legislature opted to move their meeting location nearer to the city. On October 9, 1916 the building was dedicated and has served as the state capitol ever since.
