TEACHING: For twenty years I've conducted workshops and demonstrations for students of all ages and abilities in public and private schools in the Ogden area. Also I've trained teachers in schools and in my own studio. My fees are fully funded through the Utah Arts Council and Art Access (for students with disabilities.) I offer proven projects that build confidence and I enjoy adapting my approach to meet your specific goals. First graders were encouraged to problem solve in creating objects of their choosing in the most direct way. One boy really "used his head" when he placed a sneaker shoe textured clay slab on his head, pressed down all around and created a lovely imprinted bowl. A special needs workshop for tactilely defensive toddlers enticed the children to become accustomed to touching soft moist cool clay by playing with rolling balls, clay bridges and cars, watches etc. I often present historical, geological and global perspectives of present and past uses of clay in our daily lives easily tying the workshop into other areas of the curriculum. I'm available for workshops in the Ogden area.I make my living as a ceramic artist and as a part time educator. Most of my sculpture and pottery is inspired by the forms and colors of Utah's desert canyons. Other recent sculptures begin with large drawings of the human figure. I relish sharing my love of working in clay with students in my workshops.

POTTERY: I was born in Oregon in the lush Willamette Valley where I was attracted early on to those few rock outcroppings bare of the profuse trees and bushes that clothed the land and hid its true form. Fine brushwork, colored slips of clay and rough lizard skin dry crackle glazes combine to give my pottery the visual beauty and varied textures of the desert canyons. Often I use variations of ancient rock art imagery that I find there.

SCULPTURE: The amazing rock formations in Utah's desert canyons feed my sculptural work. Currently I'm finishing up a series of urns for human ashes. And an upcoming show this November will aid in the completion of more figurative sculptures. I draw a portion of the model from several sides envisioning that portion as being a unit unto itself. I build that form in clay in three dimensions keeping the form vital. I've never seen work like it myself. That's a good reason for creating it. The possibilities are very attractive.
