Lisa M. H. Carlson (1953- ) of Park City, Utah, is a native Salt Laker who studied fine art and photography at the University of Utah. She is a painter of figurative subjects in oil and acrylic, an abstractionist who works in collage, assemblage, and other mixed-media techniques and a designer and maker of jewelry. Lisa Carlson is credited with establishing the “Assemblage Art Jewelry” movement of the 1990’s. For 25 years Carlson has personally designed and created each one-of-a-kind signature jewelry piece. Unconventionally, she works with materials chosen for their aesthetic value rather than their preciousness. Antique buttons, vintage watches, bronzed charms, and old beads are used to bring about each wildly complex composition. Her jewelry has been collected worldwide and is in many private art collections. Her style of design and technique has been copied extensively in the worlds of fashion and costume jewelry. For her paintings of “Lisa Girls”, Carlson uses her trademark baroque embellishment to construct imaginary fashion portraits. While her work is clearly representational, it focuses on color and pattern relations and is not as concerned with creating the illusion of depth. Referencing the globalization of pop culture, fashion, and fantasy, Carlson inverts the gender of the model she appears to celebrate into a riot of color and kitsch.Lisa has recieved numerous awards for her paintings and has exhibited with Springville Museum of Art, Patrick Moore Gallery, HPH Designs, and the Utah Cultural Celebration Center.
