Balladeer, ballad-maker grew up singing with my folks in Farmington and Chesterfield where an unused back bedroom became our family hootenanny and old ballads brought to the fore and dusted off. My grandmother Nelly [born in Vernal] kept a scrapbook of songs cut out from various newspapers. Dad played uke, Uncle Fred played guitar or mandolin, and Aunt Betty played Magnus Chord Organ, and the rest of us sang along. My mom would borrow the scrapbook and hand copy the ballads into a spiral notebook, and then she and my babysitter Judy would serenade us on weeknights while the wind blew in the rafters, the souls of old ghosts; and so I learned the craft.
