For 20 years Michael has been telling stories at 24 frames per second. Trusting rhythm, hitting beats and building moments. An artist from childhood, his interest in filmmaking took hold as he was finishing high school. “I’m convinced I could’ve had a successful future in any of the arts be it a musician, a singer, an actor, a painter...I gravitated to film as it incorporated all aspects of these disciplines. Over the years I’ve discovered that there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing than creatively exploiting images to tell a story. That’s all editing really is anyway; creative problem solving and unadulterated manipulation. And staying invisible. By that I mean not letting the edit interfere with the viewing experience. If the audience can become immersed in the story then I’ve done my job. However, there’s nothing quite like watching the audience physically react to a moment I’ve created, be it sweating palms, the unexpected jump or full on screaming.” In 1993 Michael met AVID and AVID met Michael. It was love at first sight. Cutting felt possible at the speed of thought. Digital editing was destined to be the future. In 1996 Michael honed his story skills on a seven year stint with the Emmy and Golden Globe nominated CBS drama “Touched by an Angel”. 200 episodes later Michael had cut across multiple genres and had been able to work with several notable Hollywood directors such as Tim Van Patten (The Sopranos, The Wire), Bethany Rooney (Brothers and Sisters, 90210) and Gene Reynolds (creator of M.A.S.H). After the series cancellation, Michael teamed with friend and business partner Steve Haugen to form Savage Pictures, a high end post company that focused entirely on long form productions. Savage boasted indie and studio feature work, high end documentaries and national/international television programming. As a result, Michael did work for 20th Century Fox, Discovery, National Geographic, HBO, Lifetime, Showtime, Lionsgate, The Weisntein Company, TV4 Sweden and many others while working alongside other notables; Roger Donaldson (The Bank Job, World’s Fastest Indian), John Gilbert A.C.E. (The Fellowship of the Ring, Killer Elite) and Michael Landon Jr. (Saving Sarah Cain, The Shunning). Michael isn’t all work though. In his off time he’s a family man, father of three and something of a desert rat. “Being cooped up in a dark edit bay for weeks on end can take its toll. I have to counter it with something. For me it’s losing myself among the red rock canyons of the Colorado Plateau. Nothing recharges my creativity more than successfully cheating death.”
