Eiko Tonami Anderson Eiko is a native of Japan. While growing, she studied calligraphy and later intensively studied the cursive form of Kanji and Kana (Japanese syllables) with a master calligraphor, Zuiun Kobayashi. In the United States she began painting watercolor paintings. Having been inspired by her late father’s Japanese paintings, she started to study sumie (Japanese black and white ink painting) in 1995. In addition she started to do Calligraphy again, specializing in writing people’s names in Japanese Kanji. This has been very popular with Americans. Also she trained Chinese brush painting with Ning Yen at Coastline College in Costa Mesa, CA, and participated Ning Yen Beijing Study trip (to study Chinese brush painting at professor Su’s studio of Beijing University). She enjoys sharing her talents. Her paintings are exhibited at various places. ART RELATED EXPERIENCE * Received honorable mention for a Japanese Sumie in the 13th Black & White Statewide Competition *Studied Japanese sumie through the Japan Calligraphy and Sumie Association for 15 years.
