A New Liberal Arts College

You may be (but more likely are not) aware that since the demise of George Wythe University, I have been searching for a way to get back in front of a college classroom. The best way to proceed, I have thought, would be to start my own.

I am pleased–more than pleased–to announce that Mount Liberty College will open its doors in Salt Lake City this coming August 2019, ready to provide the kind of liberal arts education that has always transformed its recipients.

Naturally, we need money, but in accordance with the philosophy of the liberal arts, which holds that education takes place best between a student and a teacher seated on a log, we don’t need much!

The Sorenson Legacy Foundation has provided a generous grant that will essentially cover the rent and operating costs at our Gateway Campus for the first year. That means that our fundraising going forward can concentrate on making tuition affordable for our entering freshman class of 20 eager students.

Tuition at Mount Liberty will be modest compared to other educational alternatives in the area. Our tuition for a semester is set at $2,250. But even that is a lot to ask of a student or family for an untried college with what one might consider shaky prospects. Accordingly, we would like to raise enough money to cut that first-semester cost approximately in half. I teach the liberal arts, but even my limited math skills reveal that a $1,000 tax-deductible donation from 20 of the people receiving this email would allow us to do that.

Consequently, Mount Liberty College has initiated a nonprofit GoFundMe campaign to raise that scholarship money. Imagine how proud I would be to announce to a student in August that “Your education this semester is being subsidized by (you!) . . . For extra credit, write him or her and tell her or him how grateful you are. For extra, extra credit, write it in Latin.”

My tone is light, here, and perhaps unserious, but I assure you that Mount Liberty College is the most serious thing (apart from my wife and children) I have ever undertaken. I’m getting to be an old man now, as you very well know, and MLC will be my last hurrah. To bring a true liberal arts college into being, to spend a few years passing on to students my love for and appreciation of the accumulated wisdom of the ages, and to see it established on a permanent footing for the future, well what more could one ask?

So I am asking–

I’m asking you to make that dream a reality. Join us in this enterprise. Go to MountLibertyCollege.org and see the vision that has driven us to this point. Then go to GoFundMe and do your part to make it happen. Or give first, then look!

As a clear nod to our philosophy and curriculum, your kind donation will be recognized (and shared with the students you support) according to the following three levels of gifts:

·         Trojan Warriors: up to $500

·         Roman Citizens: $501-$1,000

·         Founding Fathers: $1,000 and up
