Salary: $11.00 - $12.00 hourly
Job Description: Red Butte Garden is seeking Summer Camp Educators that are enthusiastic about teaching nature in the outdoors. Our educators prepare and teach summer camps following the Garden’s informal, STEAM-based pedagogy by providing age-appropriate, hands-on activities that explore the connections between plants and the natural world. Camp RBG runs weeklong day camps for children entering grades K-6th grade. Work schedule is approximately 29 hours per week with some weekend and evening work required. Position runs from May 2019 through August 2019, with the potential to extend through the end of October 2019.

Responsibilities

•Being a role model of respectful behavior and providing and maintaining a supportive, positive, and engaging learning environment for all campers
•Supervising summer camp volunteers
•Ensuring the well-being of program participants by following all safety and security rules, procedures, and protocols
•Calmly attending to camper injuries and illnesses
•Effectively communicating with parents of campers and employees from other departments as needed
•Providing extraordinary guest service to all program participants, parents, and Garden colleagues
•Taking direction from and communicating effectively with supervisor
•Assisting with daily operations by maintaining supplies, facilities, and equipment
•Reviewing curricula and providing feedback to the Youth Programs Manager
•Assisting the Programs Department with other activities, programs, and seasonal events as needed
•Performs other relevant duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

This is an entry-level position. Training will be provided. Must demonstrate an interest in learning about child development and guidance; a willingness to take direction from the assigned teacher; willing to obtain a food handlers permit, TB test, Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) background check, first aid training are required. Demonstrated human relation and effective human relations skills are also required.

Preferences

•Bachelor’s degree
•An interest in plants demonstrated either by education or previous employment
•Experience working in an outdoor setting
•Understanding of a variety of teaching methods and ability to adjust activities to include interests and abilities of various ages and groups of campers
•Excellent classroom management skills
•Ability to think creatively and respond calmly and quickly in stressful situations
•Enthusiasm, sense of humor, and patience
•Dependable and punctual
•Ability to accept supervision and guidance
•Background in education, horticulture, environmental studies or another related field
•Proven written and verbal communication skills
•Previous experience working with children
•Basic knowledge of lesson planning
•Must be flexible and able to work both independently and as part of a team
