ARTS COUNCIL RELEASES CALL FOR LOCAL ARTISTS TO CREATE NEW PUBLIC ART FOR DOWNTOWN’S BLOCK 70

The Salt Lake City Arts Council, in collaboration with the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City, announced today the release of a request for proposals (RFP) for the Block 70 Temporary Public Art Project. The Arts Council invites artists or artist-led teams to submit proposals for site-specific vinyl wrap murals that will visually engage those using and visiting the area.

Block 70 is one of Downtown Salt Lake City’s most central and active blocks. Located between 100 and 200 South, and Main and State Streets, Block 70 has recently become an arts destination with the new state-of-the-art performing arts center, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater; the annual Busker Fest; and the soon-to-be completed large-scale public art project on the reconstructed Regent Street. The temporary installations will contribute to programming on Block 70 that aims to enhance the vitality of this area as a gathering place and cultural core.

Two proposals will be selected, each for a vinyl wrap mural of artist-designed imagery to be installed on the Eccles Theater office windows. The first vinyl mural will be installed for six months beginning March 2020, and the second vinyl mural will be installed for six months beginning October 2020. The vinyl can be opaque or semi-transparent, and can cover each window in its entirety or incorporate negative space.  Proposed artwork should align with the Artwork Goals listed in the full RFP document.

Proposals can be submitted by all artists and artist-led teams residing in Utah from Friday, September 27, 2019 to Friday, November 1, 2019. The honorarium for each mural is $8,500. For more information on this RFP and to apply, please visit saltlakepublicart.org/for-artists/calls-for-artists/. Submissions will be accepted through the Submittable website (www.submittable.com) until 5:00 pm on November 1, 2019

The mission of the Arts Council is to promote, present, and support artists, arts organizations, and arts activities in order to further the development of the arts community and to benefit the public by expanding awareness, access, and participation.
