Reports to: Senior Manager of Education

Summary: Under the direction of the Senior Manager of Education, the Afterschool Educator is responsible for preparing and facilitating the Discovery Gateway afterschool/out of school academic enrichment program, including summer camps. The educator will teach the program curriculum with a focus on supporting individual school goals and ensuring the programming aligns with the Utah State educational standards and supports educational and social/emotional skills of the students participating.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Employment Classification: Full-time, FLSA exempt status. Work schedule is typically Monday – Friday, but may include night, weekend and holiday work hours as assigned by supervisor.

Salary Range: Starting at $12 per hour DOE.

Responsibilities:

Teach afterschool enrichment programs through both on-site in the museum and in-school experiences with participating afterschool/out of school partner programs.
Work collaboratively with partner school program staff, including regular communications and attending meetings with partner school personnel to discuss program progress and student outcomes.
Develop and execute annual summer camp experiences using DGCM approved curriculum.
Organize and communicate with community partners to design and host collaborative summer camps.
Document all experiences with surveys and evaluations associated with the program, create formative assessments to track student changes, and keep accurate records including attendance and expenses.
Work closely with educator colleagues and floor staff on leading visiting schools on field trips throughout the museum in the mornings as needed and when partner schools visit.
Act as a liaison between DGCM and the afterschool program community.
Support management of the afterschool program budget.
Assist Senior Manager to ensure fulfillment of current grants and end of grant evaluation as needed.
Actively participate in all Education meetings and DGCM events, as assigned.
Assist with community outreach events and other museum educational programming as needed.
Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
Elementary or Early Education background preferred.
2-3 years’ experience as an educator in a museum or afterschool setting preferred.
Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
Must have the ability, to work on multiple projects, meet deadlines and effectively manage projects.
Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in a collaborative work environment, communicate effectively, work and play well with others, think energetically, balance concurrent projects and set and accomplish goals.
General knowledge of applicable computer software and systems.
Classroom management skills to keep lessons on designated timeline while maintaining flexibility to meet schools’ unique needs.

Working Conditions:

Majority of the work will be done in classrooms, requiring an extended period of standing, talking and interacting with school groups. Some work will be facilitating a school group workshop.
Ability to cope with the stress of a fast-paced work environment.
Ability to work in excess of a 40-hour week with irregular work hours when needed.
Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate needs.
Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
Ability to view data on a computer and/or on paper for long periods of time.
