GENERAL PURPOSE:

Performs a variety of general administrative and professional duties as needed to plan, organize, direct and manage the acquisition, classification, and display of historical artifacts, documents and materials.

ESSENTIAL TASK FUNCTIONS

Promotes and follows the City's mission statement, values and expectations.

Serves as a technical advisor to the museum board; makes recommendations for acquisitions, development of programs and services. Works closely with the Board of Directors Treasurer to maintain and monitor the Museum's 50103 checking, savings, and certificate of deposit accounts.

Promotes the development of community awareness and interest in the historical aspects of the state and community; develops and communicates notices and announcements to the general public through various media options.

Works in partnership with the Museum Board of Directors to plan, develop, and execute the exchange and rotation of themed exhibits with the Museum's Wilcox Gallery. Works closely with State agencies who bring national traveling exhibits to the Museum.

Solicits contributions and donations of artifacts, photographs, documents, and other items with historical significance; receives and categorizes items; assures the proper preservation of museum items.

Works with the Parks and Recreation Department to maintain the Museum's section of the City website. Routinely posts historical articles to the Museum's blog and City's website and other appropriate media outlets.

Develops and recommends annual budget; monitors expenditures to assure compliance with established fiscal guidelines.

Maintains and updates the Museum's Past Perfect computer artifact inventory system and uses other computer programs used by the State Department of Arts and Museums and the Utah Museum's Association.

Coordinates tours and educational programs with local schools and interest groups; conducts tours and instructs tour members regarding museum articles and materials; develops and

Cooperates with local arts council; provides location for art shows, concerts, exhibits, etc.; participates in the special event preparations; writing narrative presentations, researching history and information; may participate in the building of museum sets and exhibit backdrops.

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Graduation from college with a bachelor's degree in history, anthropology, archeology or related field;

AND

Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience performing above or related duties;

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of the methods and techniques of developing and managing museum facilities; methods, processes and procedures for the preservation of historical artifacts; established methods of classification; community and public relations; principles and practices of general management including fiscal and human resources; budgeting processes and general accounting.

Considerable aptitude in the study of local history and the ability to present this information to the public.

Considerable ability to work independently.

Working knowledge of the operation of personal computers and various software applications including spreadsheets, word processing, etc.

Ability to organize and construct special events, exhibits and displays; perform technical and professional writing to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various age groups, history and arts organizations, and the public; prepare and present budget estimates; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

Work Environment:

Incumbent of the position generally performs in climate-controlled environment. Tasks require variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular strain (up to 50 lbs), related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Communicating, i.e., talking, hearing and seeing essential to job effectiveness. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Periodic travel required in normal course of job performance.
