In 2020, Americans for the Arts will present the first annual Jorge and Darlene Pérez Prize in Public Art & Civic Design.

The Pérez Prize in Public Art & Civic Design program celebrates and highlights the work of individuals who support, develop, and manage the incorporation of art into the design of places and spaces across the United States. The program is supported by The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation at The Miami Foundation, which was created by Jorge M. Pérez, chairman and CEO of The Related Group, and his family. The goal of the program is to celebrate unique individuals for their locally implemented contributions that support community development through the integration of art into the built environment. On a rotating basis, the Pérez Prize in Public Art & Civic Design prize will be awarded to an artist, a public art administrator, and a representative from the civic design field.

The 2020 Pérez Prize in Public Art & Civic Design will be awarded to an individual artist. The recipient will:

Receive a $30,000 award which they can use to support a project or projects, research and development, professional development, or any other activities that will enhance their ability to continue doing creative work to transform the built environment.
A letter of recognition.
Full complimentary access for one year to all of the benefits and privileges of Individual Professional membership in Americans for the Arts.
Attend the formal event at which they will be announced publicly as the recipient of the 2020 Pérez Prize in Public Art & Civic Design. This event is currently scheduled to take place in early December 2020 and may be in-person or virtual.
The chance to participate in up to three national-level opportunities that offer a unique platform for the recipient to share their knowledge, work, perspective, and experience with Americans for the Arts’ members, stakeholders, and national partners. These activities will be of mutual value and will be determined jointly. The goal is to give the recipient access to platforms for greater national visibility as well as the chance to engage in dialogue with leaders focused on their work, goals, interests, and/or desired professional learning. These opportunities may include but are not limited to presentations at conferences, training events, and other gatherings intended to enhance understanding among and influence stakeholders in the arts and other sectors regarding how artists contribute to community health, vitality, and social change. These activities are anticipated to take approximately 5-7 days of the recipients’ time from fall 2020 through June 2021. All expenses related to the recipient’s participation in these activities will be separately covered by Americans for the Arts.
Americans for the Arts will also work with the recipient on blogs, articles for media, and other documentation of the work that will be supported by the prize.
