The Utah Division of Arts and Museums is looking for 25 artists who are interested in being trained as teaching artists to teach art-making to older adults.

Lifetime Arts will present "Curriculum Design & Development for Teaching Artists" which will cover the topics in "Creative Aging Foundations" (see our website for full description) and will also introduce the history, supporting research, and exemplary programming happening across this growing field. "Curriculum Design & Development for Teaching Artists" will feature multiple approaches to the development of skill-based, sequential instructional lessons for older adults. This course will also focus on the importance of embedding intentional social engagement activities into programming and curricula. Participants will explore the subject of ageism and its impact on creative aging programming design and delivery. Teaching artists will be introduced to best practices for both in-person and remote programming.

Who should apply:
Artists (that are not fully employed by a cultural organization*) who are interested in teaching art to older adult populations.

What you receive:
-Independent Artists will be paid $200 to attend three 2-hour web based training sessions on August 30-September 1 from 9am-11am each day (a total of 6 hours of instruction.)
-Artists who complete the training will be on a published roster of teaching artists qualified to teach sequential Creative Aging art courses to older adults. This roster will be publicized on the Utah Commission on Aging website and Utah Division of Arts & Museum's website.

Goal:
After participating in the training, UA&M asks participating artists to complete a practicum that offers a sequential learning experience for older adults. An example would be an 8 week watercolor course for older adults that builds on learning each week. If desired, we will help artists find an organization serving older adults to host their practicum.

Funding:
UA&M has dedicated funding to support Creative Aging projects. Artists who complete the course will be eligible to apply for a grant of up to $3,000 to fund a practicum. Artists who are interested in applying for this grant must partner with an organization.

*We hope artists who are fully employed by a cultural organization will apply with their colleagues to "Creative Aging Foundations" for cultural organizations, instead of this training. E.g. a dancer in a dance company.
