Inspired by the adventures of the Odyssey, Hero’s Wake travels through water, air and land, weaving together encounters with gods, monsters, lovers and thieves.
Aerial Arts of Utah Student Performing Company reimagines these classic tales, backfills one-sided stories, highlights characters left shaded, and explores the idea that a hero is not always heroic. Following this original antihero, and the chaos left behind, gives thought to what it means to be a public figure with powerful friends behind the scenes, intimates whose lives get turned inside out, and everyone else left reeling.
Aerial Arts of Utah is thrilled to be putting on their first full show at Sugar Space Arts Warehouse this June! Originally hosting aerial classes at Sugar Space’s Sugarhouse studio, AAU embraces the opportunity to come back to their roots. Hero’s Wake takes advantage of the industrial feel of the warehouse to explore unconventional stage set-ups and more theatrically inspired content.
Celebrating nine years in Salt Lake, Aerial Arts of Utah now boasts a company of recreational adult students to rival most professional aerialists in town. Don’t let the name Student Performing Company fool you, these emerging artists are fierce, both in the air and in their vision. Past credits include Great Salt Lake Fringe Fest, AAU’s Flight of Fancy and original production Silk Alchemy. Under the direction of Nancy Simpson Carter, members of SPC have collaborated on a show that pushes their physical limits and challenges their performance abilities.
