Journalist Mary Mapes -CANCELLED

Presented by Weber State University at Austad Auditorium at Val A. Browning Center

MARCH 18, 2020: Cancelled until further notice.

*****

We are excited to announce that we will be bringing Award-Winning Journalist Mary Mapes to campus March 30, 2020.

While working for 60 Minutes and CBS legend Dan Rather, Mary Mapes broke the story that exposed abuses of prisoners at a CIA-run prison in Abu Ghraib, Afghanistan. For that work, she won a Peabody Award, one of broadcast journalism’s highest honors. Later in 2004, she broke the story about President George W. Bush’s spotty record in the National Guard during the Vietnam War. For that work, she was fired.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truth_(2015_film)

Mary Mapes’ story, based on her book Truth and Duty, is dramatized in the 2015 movie Truth, starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford. It illustrates the battle over facts in politics and the damage that the Internet can do.
