Heather Barron Nancy Vorm & Evan Terry

Presented by Phillips Gallery at Phillips Gallery

Please join us this Friday, January 17th for the opening of New Work by Heather Barron & Nancy Vorm in our Main Gallery and Evan Terry in our Dibble Gallery.

Since taking up painting in 1998, Heather Barron has become one of Phillips Gallery’s beloved artists. Perhaps her success has something to do with her relatable subject matter. Having grown up in England, she innately infuses her work with a bit of British charm and decorous character. Applying the format of religious icons from the Renaissance, her figures pose pensively, gazing gracefully, or shall we say “filled with grace,” toward the viewer. Her works compel one to be comforted by the compassion woven into each composition. Creating scenes that speak of joy, goodness, and beauty Barron intends to create a space in which to give pause.

Originally a weaver, Nancy Vorm served as a member of the Duneland Weaver’s Guild in Northwest Indiana before relocating to the Wasatch Front. In 2004, she returned to school and in 2009, received a batcher’s degree in Painting and Drawing from the University of Utah. For the past several years, Vorm has worked in encaustic (painting with wax). Her work is a continual exploration of layers and textures in various media and techniques. “My inspiration comes from observing the imperfections found both in nature and my surroundings. Utilizing natural materials and elements is always part of my process. Beeswax, papers, and applications of inks and rusts are the elements that occupy me most.”

Evan Terry, "The Quest", oil on panel, 24 X 30 inches
Evan Terry earned a Bachelor’s degree in Painting and Drawing from the University of Utah 35 years ago. During that time he studied under Alvin Gittins, V. Douglas Snow, and Earl Jones. Upon graduation he found a steady career in government work and painted in his free time, occasionally showing his oil paintings in various state and local exhibits. When he retired in 2005 he began pursuing art full time. To hone his craft, he put himself through a rigorous task over the next nine years: painting representations of each of Vermeer’s 36 paintings using printed book photographs as his source. During that time and since then, he has pursued his passion for Utah’s landscape. This exhibit is a compilation of nearly thirty colorful and delightful, mainly abstract done from his imagination, renderings of our beloved desert.

Please join us for these artists’ talks between 5 and 6 PM prior to the opening reception JANUARY 17th
