Utah Opera presents a concert in which all of the music was composed by women. The one-hour concert includes two short operas by Utah women: “No Ladies in the Lady’s Book” and “The Better Man.”
In recognition of anniversaries in 2020 of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution as well as the first time a woman voted in Utah, Utah Opera presents a concert in which all of the music was composed by women. The one-hour concert by Utah Opera's five Resident Artists features Lisa DeSpain and Rachel Peter's "No Ladies in the Lady's Book," a comic send-up of many ways in which women contributed to the success of the transcontinental railroad. The concert concludes with a short opera commissioned this year by Utah Opera from Utah composer Margot Murdoch and Utah librettist Kathleen Cahill: "The Better Man." Their short opera focuses on the 1896 Utah State Senate race between Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon and her own husband.
