Valentine Paper Cutting and Pioneer Crafts

Valentine Paper Cutting and Pioneer Crafts

Presented by Daughters of Utah Pioneers - McQuarrie Memorial Museum, St. George at McQuarrie Memorial DUP Museum

Remember when Valentines Day was simpler?  When most valentines were homemade, left on doorsteps with a quick knock or kick and a fast escape?  When the recipient would hurry to see who had left the sweet thoughts before they could get away?  Nowadays the stores fill their shelves with boxes of valentines of all kinds the week after Christmas so children can have plenty of time to choose their favorite cartoon or superhero theme.

It is nice sometimes to step back in time and recall the way things used to be.

Do you have a good eye, a steady hand, and a pair of sharp scissors?  If so, you may enjoy the February presentation at the McQuarrie Memorial Museum in St. George.  On February 15th at 10:00 a.m. Susannah Nilsson will lead her colleagues from the Santa Clara Historical Museum in highlighting the cultural traditions of Swiss paper cutting craft.

This fun Third Weekend Event is presented by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and is held at the always-interesting McQuarrie Memorial Museum.  Those attending will learn about the history and culture behind the Swiss art of paper cutting.  Beautiful, intricate, and delicate pieces will be demonstrated and explained.  Attendees will have an opportunity to try their hands at this creative art form and maybe learn to make their own very special valentines.

The DUP McQuarrie Memorial Museum is located at 145 North 100 East in St. George and is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (except on Wednesdays and Sundays).  It is free to the public and has handicap access. More information is available at  http://dupstgeorge.org or 435-628-7274.
