VENUE CLOSED
The American Southwest is revered for its deep, colorful canyons; broad unsullied vistas; and its spectacular cliff-lines. However, this modern appreciation is in stark contrast with the initial experiences and early descriptions of the Colorado Plateau by the conquistadors, explorers, trappers and miners who first saw it. How and when the former “Unknown land” became the premiere outdoor destination and landscape sensation it is today begins with the first American explorations into the southwest. These parties brought with them the first geologists, who saw for themselves the Earth laid bare as they pondered the deeper meaning and scientific lessons of the Plateau’s landforms. These initial scientific observations forever altered our relationship with this rocky paradise and ushered in the era of National Park support and federal protections.
