The Orchestra at Temple Square and Temple Square Chorale will join their musical talents for this year’s annual spring concert in the Salt Lake Tabernacle. The Orchestra will open the concert with Folk Songs of the Four Seasons, by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The concert will continue with “Let the People Praise Thee, O God,” an anthem written by William Mathias for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Also included in the program is the Utah premiere of Life Songs, two new pieces for choir and orchestra written by Ryan Murphy, originally commissioned by the Dallas Symphony. The concert will conclude with the Choir and Orchestra performing Gloria, by Francis Poulenc, with Melissa Heath as the soprano soloist.
The evening’s performances will be under the baton of Ryan Murphy, associate music director of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square and conductor of the Temple Square Chorale.
The Orchestra at Temple Square is an all-volunteer musical organization formed at the direction of Gordon B. Hinckley, then President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its charter is to accompany the musical ensembles of The Tabernacle Choir organization and also to perform in concerts of its own.
The Temple Square Chorale was formed in 1999 as part of changes to The Tabernacle Choir organization, which included the creation of the Orchestra at Temple Square. The Chorale serves as a training ensemble for new members of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. It is comprised of new members completing their audition process, members who were new to the Choir the previous year, and a few other current Choir members, to provide a complement of roughly 110 singers.
