About the lecture:

Join us in learning how one Muslim man in Minnesota has made it his personal mission to undermine ISIS. Mohamed Ahmed has dedicated much of his time to creating cartoons that explain Islam — and why ISIS is wrong. He's the creator and voice of a cartoon character he calls Average Mohamed, and for nearly 10 years Ahmed has been producing these online cartoons to try to counter the ISIS message. The cartoon aims to give talking points to parents, clergy members and kids to combat the message of violent extremists and offer hope and acceptance in its place. Join Average Mohamed in a discussion about love for country, culture, and democracy.

About Mohamed Ahmed:

Mohamed Amin Ahmed, Founder, Chairman and Executive Director of the Average Mohamed Organization, migrated to the United States 25 years ago and has played numerous roles in both civic and corporate worlds. At the onset of the 9/11 crisis, Mohamed joined the Free Muslim Coalition Against Terrorism and has since been the Chapter President for Minnesota. He is the founder of Average Mohamed, an organization that passionately promotes ideas of counter-terrorism through the use of popular culture. His counter-terrorism mantra is: "It takes an idea, to defeat an idea". He currently is a Bush Foundation Fellow, member of the Somali American Task Force, 2018 Citizen Diplomat of the Year and lives in Minneapolis with his wife and four children.

About the Ambassador John Price & Marcia Price World Affairs Lecture Series:

UCCD has been a long-term member of the World Affairs Councils of America, and in 2006, UCCD began hosting Ambassador John Price & Marcia Price World Affairs Lecture Series. This lecture series, in partnership with Westminster College, is designed to inform attendees about key foreign policy issues, to create a dialogue about timely topics, and to foster a globally savvy community. Our guest lecturers are leading authorities in their fields, coming from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds, and are nationally recognized authors, academics, and foreign affairs, experts. The impact of our lectures is the long-lasting understanding of the context of world affairs in our interconnected global society.

The Ambassador John Price & Marcia Price World Affairs Lecture Series is hosted in partnership with Westminster College and is funded in part by The Price Family Foundation, Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts & Parks (ZAP), and the Salt Lake City Arts, Culture, and Events fund.

Does this lecture cost money?

The World Affairs Lecture Series is free and open to the public. However, registration is required.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

While all ages are welcome to attend, due to the content of the lecture, we recommend ages 12+.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Free parking is available on Westminster College campus after 5:00 p.m. A parking permit is not required. Click here to view the campus map. (This lecture is held in building #4. For optimal parking, we suggest parking lot C, as 1300 E is currently closed for construction.)

Will refreshments be available before the lecture?

UCCD invites the public to attend a small meet and greet reception with the guest lecturer at 6:00 pm; The lecture begins at 7:00 pm. We serve tiny savory and sweet bites, as well as water and other libations. However, we are not able to accommodate dietary restrictions. Food and beverages are not allowed in the lecture halls.
