Herpetofauna and Mercury Issues of Great Salt Lake

Herpetofauna and Mercury Issues of Great Salt Lake

Presented by Westminster University at Online/Virtual Space

Are you expecting a typical story about lake ecology? You may be disappointed as there is nothing typical about Great Salt Lake nor this time in Earth’s history. In this book, lake experts partner to reframe and update our knowledge base, include unheard voices, and dispense with incomplete understandings about our unique lake. It is a time of change and reckoning.
Water is not the only place you find life at Great Salt Lake. The shorelines that surround it are home to reptiles and birds that feed on the abundance of life fueled in part by the lake. Some of these critters spend time in the water and can build up toxins like mercury that are concentrated in the sediments. Panelists include graduate student and Westminster alumna Abby Scott and Dr. David Kimberly and will be moderated by GSLI coordinator Jaimi Butler.

The Salty Science Series is hosted by Great Salt Lake at Westminster College and will feature contributing authors in "Great Salt Lake Biology: a Terminal Lake in a Time of Change" in a series of 6 panel discussions. We hope that you will break out your inner nerd and have a lake themed dinner or drink ready to enjoy while you learn about the lake. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the night for the most creative food or libation. Jaimi’s dinner for this first event will include green south arm (avocado) toast sprinkled with course ground halite and a hard-boiled pickled egg on the side.

Don't worry if you cannot make this virtually in person, as they will be recorded and available when you have time.
