On the program are violin and piano works by Dvorak, Grant Still, Korngold, and Beethoven, performed by violinist Will Hagen, the third-prize winner of the 2015 Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition, and University of Utah faculty and Steinway Artist, pianist Vedrana Subotic.
Will performs on the 1732 ‘Arkwright Lady Rebecca Sylvan’ Stradivarius.
Dvorak’s sonatina charms with its American-influenced tunes and dancing country rhythms. The jazzy three-movement suite by Black composer William Grant Still, is a rarely performed gem inspired by Harlem Renaissance art. Korngold’s suite, “Much Ado About Nothing,” is imagined as incidental music to Shakespeare’s play, and bears the composer’s signature style of lush romanticism. Beethoven Variations on Mozart’s aria “Se vuol ballare” from “The Marriage of Figaro,” delight with elegant and mercurial melodies.
