CANCELLED
The University of Utah Department of Theatre has cancelled its public performance of SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD.
***
A debut work of surprising power and enduring popularity, Jason Robert Brown’s Songs for a New World continues to defy expectations—after twenty-five years, this “abstract musical” is more relevant than ever. Characters separated by time and circumstances sing their stories in isolation. Their names are unknown, their relationships unspoken, but the distance between them is an illusion: all are on the brink, in the aftermath, or at the very center of decisions that will completely change their lives. They may never meet, but they are part of the same story.
Beginning in the fifteenth century and leading to an uncertain future, Songs for a New World is a journey told through landmarks, a map made from stories instead of roads. These songs—and the spaces between them—remind us of the part we play in every story. What is unwritten is ours to decide, alone and together: the connections we choose to make, and the stars we choose to guide us on our way to a new world.
