UMOCA Exhibitions Opening Reception

Presented by Utah Museum of Contemporary Art at Utah Museum of Contemporary Art

Join us as we celebrate the opening of two new exhibitions—Dimitri Kozyrev's After Palekh in the Exit Gallery and Joshua Graham's Walking In Place in the AIR Space. Both Kozyrev and Graham are artists-in-residence at the museum, and their exhibitions are capstones to their year-long residencies. The event will also feature a live performance by artist Alex Caldiero, whose work is currently on display in the Street Gallery, in recognition of National Poetry Month.

In After Palekh, painter Dimitri Kozyrev responds to the changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As studios, galleries, and museums closed in 2020, Kozyrev's workspace diminished to the size of his kitchen tabletop. In response, he began to draw inspiration from small-scale Russian folk-art paintings called Palekh miniatures, many of which are displayed in the exhibition.

Joshua Graham's exhibition Walking In Place is a site-specific installation in the AIR Space consisting of found objects, artifacts, and other ephemera collected while in residence at the museum. The work reflects Graham's commitment to a year-long practice of walking the paths that zigzag across the foothills above Salt Lake City, searching for objects that inspire wonder and spark curiosity.
