The bees are buzzing and the sun is shining which means it’s time to bust out your bike and get ready for the 9th Annual SLUG Cat Presented by Fat Tire. Hosted in conjunction with SLUG Mag’s bike issue, the alley cat-style bike race sends riders all over downtown SLC to solve clues, play games and win points all while racing towards the finish line. The race takes place on Saturday, May 29 with registration starting 4 p.m. at Saturday Cycles and a 5 p.m. kickoff to start the fun.

Every year SLUG Mag hosts the SLUG Cat bike race to celebrate SLC’s vibrant bike community. Inspired by the scavenger hunt-style bicycle races made popular by bike messengers in places like New York and San Francisco, SLUG Cat has become an unparalleled event in the community and is a must for all local riders, whether you’ve been cycling for years or are still on training wheels.

Along with the usual Men’s & Women’s categories, this year, SLUG Magazine has partnered with Magnum Bikes to create a new e-bike category! This category will allow for e-bike riders to join in on the fun and win an awesome prize courtesy of Magnum. Don’t have an e-bike? Rent one for the day from Magnum Bikes or your nearest GREENbike station to participate!

Competitors will be given a manifest of clues that direct them to locations around downtown Salt Lake City. They must decipher the clues and plan out a route to get to the finish as fast as possible and win the grand prize. Riders will race from location to location, performing challenges and tasks along the way to earn points that will bolster their score. The race ends with a party and awards ceremony at the SLUG Mag HQ filled with good prizes and good beats provided by DJ Nix Beat.

We’re excited to return to normal following the COVID-19 pandemic, but SLUG Magazine is committed to the health and safety of the community and will continue to follow the state’s rules and regulations for events. This includes strict sanitation procedures, proper PPE for staff and participants and social distancing enforcement at the event.
