Center for Latter-day Saint Arts (NYC), in partnership with Tanner Dance (SLC), announces VISION, an evening of dance. VISION explores the moving body as a source of creation, inspiration and imagination through a broad range of choreographic works brought to life on the stage.
The concert features works from eleven choreographers, selected from a national roster of professional dancers, who survey personal and cultural moments of transformation. While the choreographers identify as Latter-day Saint and the works, themselves, consider tenets of faith both physically embodied and culturally understood, audiences do not need to identify as Latter-day Saint to appreciate the concert.
Tickets can be purchased at ARTTix.org or by calling 355-ARTS. General admission is $20 with a $10 ticket available for students and seniors. Group discounts are available by calling ARTTix to groups of 10 and more.
The concert is appropriate for audience members ages 6+ and will run approximately 105 minutes with one intermission.
Choreographers and companies include: Rachel Barker (UT), Jacque Bell (UT), Wendy Bone (ID), Shayla Bott (UT), Carley Conder (AZ), Adam Dyer (UT), Amy Markgraf (UT), Judith Mikita (OH), Lisa Ford Moulton (OH), Christine Ollerton (UT), and Keely Song (UT).
Marin Leggat Roper, Kathie Debenham, Pat Debenham, Lita Little Giddins and Kevin Giddins serve as the executive producers for VISION: an evening of dance with support from Mary Ann Lee.

Patrick Debenham, a producer says, “Through a first ever concert, [VISION] highlights working dance artists who identify with LDS culture, traditions, beliefs and expansive world views.” Says Judith Mikita, a concert choreographer and current dance faculty at the University of Cincinnati, Conservatory of Dance, “the fulfillment of a vision happens in its sharing. We hope the audience will recognize the ingenuity, imagination, and inspiration available to each of us. Whether individually or collectively, we all have access to [vision].”
The concert’s works for both stage and screen will span the genres, from postmodern to commercial contemporary and contemporary ballet.
Keely Song, an adopted Korean-American Latter-day Saint and current Brigham Young University faculty member, explores the concept of movement ‘ancestry’ in her work, Linkage. Carley Conder, founding artistic director of CONDER/Dance and alumni of the University of Utah Department of Ballet, will present the highly athletic and intimate Howard Hughes is ill. Howard Hughes is dead. Howard Hughes is living in Las Vegas.
The evening also tethers itself to a history of culture and community, as well as the artistic pioneers within that history.
Performers from Tanner Dance, the dance company and legacy of hometown visionary, Virginia Tanner, will perform Shout. Originally choreographed by Jacque Bell for the Winnipeg Ballet, the work is now reset by dancers from Children’s Dance Theater for VISION and includes more than 70 performers of all ages (see video below).
An excerpt from Virginia Tanner’s historic 1962 work, Woman the Pioneer, reconceived by Christine Ollerton in 1979, will also be performed.
Other performers include Lisa Ford Moulton, former dancer with Ririe-Woodbury; Adam Dyer, formerly of the NYU Tisch School for the Arts; and Rachel Barker, sharing her award-winning screendance, Sedimented, Here, choreographed and filmed in southern Utah.
Choreographer Lisa Moulton says, “I hope audiences will gain a better understanding of what LDS dance artists have been doing in their own spheres and how convening these voices is so important as we recognize and celebrate our artistic heritage.”
