Curiouser by Wasatch Contemporary Dance Company

Presented by Wasatch Contemporary Dance Company at Covey Center for the Arts

About the show, company director Jessica Heaton says, “The book Alice in Wonderland speaks to themes of inclusion vs. exclusion, mental health, the need to “fit in”, and influence vs. manipulation, making it not only a nostalgic children’s book but a very poignant piece of literature for our world today. Just as Alice followed her curiosity down into Wonderland, we would like to take our audience down that same path with us to approach the changing world around us with curiosity, compassion and creativity.”

The concert will feature work from company directors Jessica Heaton, Heather Norton, and Jocelyn Smith with company choreographers Rachel Robison, Jaclyn Brown, and guest choreographer Elizabeth Dibble also presenting work. The show is appropriate for a family audience (ages 6 and up) and will run approximately 90 minutes with one intermission. On October 29 from 4-6:30 PM Wasatch Contemporary dancers and directors will also offer a workshop for dancers ages 14-18 in conjunction with the performance.

About her work, choreographer Jaclyn Brown says, ‘Inner Me/Enemy is a work that investigates mental health issues and their physical manifestations in the body, as well as their impact on social interactions in both isolation and a group setting. Based on the Mad Hatter’s question “Have I gone mad?” from the novel Alice in Wonderland, we navigate this sensitive issue with respect to the community that it affects and an aim to destigmatize discussion of its related topics. During the process of creation, it has been difficult to probe questions about how to embody the various forms of mental illness in a way that deals with the elements of dance, rather than adopting a characterization we do not have experience with ourselves. Although discussions have been had with the dancers about our very real experiences with mental health crises, we have made an immense effort to abstract these concepts into a piece that displays a less-than literal interpretation.”
