Bright Star

From the very first moment to the last breathtaking note, there is much to love about this powerful new musical. The book, which was written by actor/comedian Steve Martin, is based on a true event and the American folk song “Iron Mountain Baby.” The music was written by Steve Martin and folk singer/songwriter Edie Brickell, who also crafted the lyrics.

Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in the 1940’s, with flashbacks to the 1920’s, the story first introduces Billy Cane, a young man who has returned from war only to find that life at home has changed since he’s been gone. He decides to take a journey of self-discovery and follow his dream to move to Asheville and become a writer. There, he is hired by Alice Murphy, the Asheville Southern Journal’s stern and formidable editor, and a strange connection between the two blossoms. Alice, inspired by their meeting, sets off on a journey to uncover the truth of her past. When a dark secret is brought to light, it will have the power to change both of their lives.

With beautiful melodies and powerfully moving characters, this triumphant story of love and forgiveness will break your heart and put it back together again.

Disclaimer: We don’t want to give away the entire narrative, but this show is a powerful portrayal of the resolve of the human spirit to go on, and ultimately triumph, even under the direst of circumstances. There are some brief, but crucial scenes which may be disturbing to a few, but without which there could be no story. We present these scenes with as much sensitivity as possible without diminishing their importance or impact.
