What if a quilt wasn’t just a quilt, but also a map? In this activity we will explore how quilts can be maps—literally and symbolically—with insights gained from works of art in UMFA’s new exhibition Handstitched Worlds: The Cartography of Quilts. This exhibition, on view through Sunday, May 15, 2022, is full of beautiful traditional and contemporary quilts, many of which use embroidery techniques to create maps. Get your compass ready to steer toward your own truth, as we create embroidered maps using thread, needle, and paper.
This activity is part of Sew Saturday on February 19, 2022 where admission is FREE ALL DAY 10 am to 5 pm. Advance tickets strongly encouraged.
