Co-author of the bestselling, "The Burning Book: A Jewish-Mormon Memoir," Jason Olson will discuss how two covenant-making events, his Bar Mitzvah and his baptism, have shaped his identities as a Jew and as a Latter-day Saint. He will navigate how his Bar Mitzvah covenant to Torah has bound him to Jewish time, Jewish land, and Jewish civilization. At the same time, he will explore how his baptismal covenant as a disciple of Jesus Christ led him to missionary service, Temple marriage, and Christlike chaplaincy.

Jason is a Navy foreign area officer (Lt. Commander) and serves as defense policy officer at U.S. Forces Korea. He previously served as regimental chaplain forward at 2d Marine Division. Prior to that, he was command chaplain and public affairs officer for Ballistic Missile Defense Commander, 7th Fleet, as well as faculty for Central Texas College, where he taught Western Civilization to active-duty sailors. Prior to that, he was staff chaplain at Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan. He holds a Ph.D. in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from Brandeis University (2016). His first book, "America's Road to Jerusalem: The Impact of the Six-Day War on Protestant Politics," was released under Lexington Books in 2018. In his doctoral studies, he held fellowships with The Schusterman Center for Israel Studies, the Israel Institute, the American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise, and the American Jewish Archives. In 2013, he served as teaching assistant for the Summer Institute for Israel Studies (Brandeis), where he educated an international group of scholars in Israel and the Palestinian territories in political, religious, and social issues.
