Dvořák’s New World Symphony

Dvořák’s New World Symphony

Presented by Utah Symphony and Onstage Ogden at Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts

Dvořák’s New World Symphony is one of the most popular of all time, with universal appeal. Neil Armstrong even took a tape recording to the moon in 1969.  While the Bohemian composer was living in America, he was stirred by Native American storytelling and African-American spirituals, and the New World Symphony (first numbered Symphony No. 5) marks a major milestone of American—or “New World”—music as inspiration for classical composition. The tension builds with Barber’s Violin Concerto, performed by Utah native Aubree Oliverson, and Ravel’s Boléro, the beloved experimental work that rises to a loud, exultant finale you can feel like fireworks on the fourth of July. Celebrate the Utah Symphony’s season opener with adventurous expressions of the Old World and the New.
