Westminster Concert Series - Alam Khan, Master of the Sarod

Westminster Concert Series - Alam Khan, Master of the Sarod

Presented by Westminster University at Vieve Gore Concert Hall in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory - Westminster College

Renowned sarod musician Alam Khan will be featured in an evening of North Indian classical ragas. WCS audiences will delight in his incredible virtuosity and artistry. The son of the legendary sarod player Ali Akbhar Khan, Alam performs and teaches at the Ali Akbar College of Music and tours internationally. This is a not-to-be missed concert of classical North Indian music: on display will be an incredible array of complex rhythms (talas) joined together with a multitude of affects and modes in works called ragas inspired by everything from the time of day, the seasons, to emotional reflections. Alam’s visionary performance of North Indian classical sarod playing, accompanied by the Indian drum tabla player Indranil Mallick, are something not to be missed bridging past to present. https://alamkhan.com/media/

The sarod is an unfretted 25-string lute-like instrument with some strings for melodies, some strings for droning. It has a sheepskin head and a metal-plated neck, and in his hands the instrument tells you what it's made of: his picking hand is heavy, and his notes explode with a knocking, thumping, and ringing.
