Paint and paper your way through a contemplative art process as we explore ancient wisdom and modern abstract expressionism. Through instruction, demonstration, and hands-on exercises, students will survey the fundamentals of design, composition, and color as the components to create an abstract painting. We will view famous works of art and discuss our responses to them. Do you love it or hate it? Let’s hear why! Class will culminate with an exhibition of students’ abstract paintings made with acrylic paint and artisan-crafted papers. Because abstract expressionism has an emotive quality, we will pair modern art with ancient wisdom through a brief introduction to the Tao. This mindful awareness around flow, flexibility and finding spaces informs artistic choices necessary for abstract painting.
