Pulse of the Planet: Primatology and Conservation

Pulse of the Planet: Primatology and Conservation

Presented by Clark Planetarium and Salt Lake Community College at Clark Planetarium

We are living in what will likely turn out to be the sixth mass extinction in the history of our planet, with current extinction rates being significantly higher than typical background extinction rates. Primates, our closest living relatives, are the most endangered group of mammals with over 65% of species being threatened with extinction, and nearly all showing declining populations. Conservation of primates and their habitats is one of the most critical issues in primatology, and for primatologists, it is essential to take action to combat the impending primate extinction crisis. We’ll explore the realities of doing fieldwork, along with the wide variety of conservation activities engaged in by primatologists.
