Free Art Talk: The Nature Theater of Christo and J...

Presented by Kimball Art Center at Kimball Art Center

The Nature Theater of Christo and Jeanne-Claude by Professor Jonathan Fineberg, Visiting Distinguished Professor, UC-Irvine and Edward William and Jane Marr Gutgsell Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Professor Fineberg, who has followed the work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude closely for more than 35 years and written often about them, will offer some fresh thoughts about the way in which art affects politics, putting the work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude in a larger context of art that we think of as “political.” He will also draw on examples ranging from Chartres Cathedral to the performance practice of the contemporary artist Andrea Fraser. Previewing part of his forthcoming book Modern Art at the Border of Mind and Brain (University of Nebraska Press, August 2015), Fineberg will speculate on how a profoundly political and social art practice, like that of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, may affect our social thought and even the neural networks of the human brain.  Admission is free but space is limited, please RSVP.
