State of Eaglies in Utah

Presented by HawkWatch International at Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business Auditorium - Westminster College

The State of Utah Eagles is a free, public presentation by HawkWatch International, a partner in the Utah Eagle Working Group. Dr. Steven Slater, HWI Conservation Science Director, will discuss the current conditions of both Golden and Bald Eagles in Utah.

Golden Eagles are suffering from long-term, human caused threats that have been pushing their populations down for several years. Why and what does that mean for their future? Dr. Slater will discuss the research HWI has been conducting to better understand their needs and guide conservation plans.

Bald Eagles populations are soaring high these days, and are a conservation success story after being listed as an endangered species back in 1967. But last year we witnessed something never seen before, mass mortality of Bald Eagles throughout Utah caused by the West Nile Virus. Why did this happen and will it happen again? Dr. Slater will discuss the current condition and what to do if you find a dead or injured eagle in the wild.
